Description of the Journal:
This is a journal that goes over the projects and skills learned in my video editing class. From story structure to sound editing I learned many skills to help edit my videos. I am excited to share my journal! It's broken into two sections. "Projects" where I talk about the skills I took away from each project and "Organization" which goes into the depth of how I have become a better editor through the new organizing techniques I learned.
Projects
We did 4 projects in this class. I learned a lot, from editing shortcuts to fixing audio.
Creating a Drawing Tutorial
Project #1
We were given footage and had to create a 3-5 min tutorial with the images and videos we received. We learned the basics of editing and the importance of organizing.

My takeaway is how important it is to organize media when editing. Both on the hard drive and in premier pro.

Skills Developed:
-Organizing media
-Creating Sequence

Project #2
Of The Earth
We received the script as well as paperwork explaining the film's vibe and context plot. With the paperwork and footage we worked on continuity editing in creating this fictional scene.
Skills Developed:
-Working with a script
-Continuity editing

Project #3
Movie Trailer
We chose a movie we wanted to make a trailer about. I chose the Joker. My favorite part about this was doing sound design to immerse the audience into the world.
With Sound Design
Project #4
Documentary
We edited a documentary about young girls skateboarding. We had to sort through interviews and b-roll to create a story. Below is some simple color grading I did with the raw footage.

Skills Developed:
-three act story structure in tailer
-Sub sequencing
-sound FX
Without Sound Design
Skills Developed:
-color grading
-Audio cleaning up
-Story building and Editing on paper.

Organization
(More in depth)
Half of what makes a good editor is organization. It helps with understanding your media and allows for a quicker editing process.
Sorting Media into Folders
By sorting media into folders you are able to know where all your clips are. Creating folder names is up to you. Folders on a hard drive as well as in the software.

Creating Subclips
Everyone edits differently but a technique I use involves subclips. Subclips are sections of video clips. This helps speed up the editing process because you have the important sections you want for a scene all labeled and possibly all in on subclip folder.

Storyboarding
Before putting the video footage in the timeline you can organize which clips go where. This is also known as storyboarding where you can organize the clips in the order you want before being more specfic for trimming in the timeline.
Naming + Labeling
Going through the footage in my project and labeling videos seemed like too much time consuming work. But by labeling the videos you are also reviewing all the clips so as you edit you are not missing any scenes.

Sub Sequences
This technique helps structure and block the overall shape of your story. It creates a indvidual timeline of a scene or act and then you bring those timelines into the main timeline.
